Set the inventory size of the VMware vCenter Server Appliance based on the number of hosts and virtual machines that you plan to have in the VMware vCenter Server Appliance inventory.

Install the VMware vCenter Server Appliance and configure the database. See Configure Database Settings for the VMware vCenter Server Appliance and the vSphere Installation and Setup documentation.

In the VI Client, power off the VMware vCenter Server Appliance virtual machine.

Right-click the VMware vCenter Server Appliance virtual machine in the inventory pane and select Edit Settings.

On the Hardware tab, select Memory.

Set the memory size based on your planned inventory size.

Option

Description

4 GB or higher

Memory requirement for fewer than 10 hosts and 100 virtual machines in the VMware vCenter Server Appliance inventory.

8 GB or higher

Memory requirement for between 10 and 100 hosts or between 100 and 1000 virtual machines in the VMware vCenter Server Appliance inventory.

13 GB or higher

Memory requirement for between 100 and 400 hosts or between 1000 and 4000 virtual machines in the VMware vCenter Server Appliance inventory.

17 GB or higher

Memory requirement for over 400 hosts or 4000 virtual machines in the VMware vCenter Server Appliance inventory.

Click OK.

Power on the VMware vCenter Server Appliance virtual machine.

Log in to the VMware vCenter Server Appliance Web console.

On the vCenter Server tab, click Settings.

Select the inventory size from the drop-down menu.

For fewer than 100 hosts and 1000 virtual machines in the VMware vCenter Server Appliance inventory.

medium

For between 100 and 400 hosts or between 1000 and 4000 virtual machines in the VMware vCenter Server Appliance inventory.

large

For over 400 hosts or 4000 virtual machines in the VMware vCenter Server Appliance inventory.
