You can take a snapshot while the virtual machine is powered on, powered off, or suspended.

Do not take a snapshot when the virtual machine is communicating with another computer.

Note

If you require strong performance from virtual machines, consider defragmenting the guest operating system’s drives before taking a snapshot. Use the guest operating system’s defragmentation utility.

To exclude virtual disks from snapshots, change the disk mode. For more information about changing the disk mode, see Modify a Hard Disk.

If you are suspending a virtual machine, wait until the suspend operation has finished before taking a snapshot.

1

In the Commands section of the virtual machine’s Summary tab, expand the Snapshot command (if it is not already expanded) and click Take Snapshot.

2

Enter the name of the snapshot and any notes and click OK.

The snapshot is created.
