You can create a VMFS datastore on any Fibre Channel storage device that your ESX host can access. You use the vSphere Client to set up VMFS datastores in advance on any SCSI-based storage devices that your ESX discovers. ESX can format SCSI-based storage devices, such as SCSI, iSCSI, or FC SAN, as VMFS datastores. VMFS datastores primarily serve as repositories for virtual machines.

When you create a datastore on a Fibre Channel storage device, the Add Storage wizard guides you through the configuration.

Before you create a new datastore on a Fibre Channel device, rescan a Fibre Channel adapter to discover any newly added LUNs.


Log in to the vSphere Client and select the host from the Inventory panel.


Click the Configuration tab and click Storage in the Hardware panel.


Click Datastores and click Add Storage.


Select the Disk/LUN storage type and click Next.


Select the Fibre Channel device to use for your datastore, and click Next.


Select the device that does not have a datastore name displayed in the VMFS Label column. The name present in the VMFS Label column indicates that the device contains a copy of an existing VMFS datastore.

If the disk you are formatting is blank, the Current Disk Layout page automatically presents the entire disk space for storage configuration.


If the disk is not blank, review the current disk layout in the top panel of the Current Disk Layout page and select a configuration option from the bottom panel.



Use all available partitions

Dedicates the entire disk or LUN to a single VMFS datastore. If you select this option, all file systems and data currently stored on this device is destroyed.

Use free space

Deploys a VMFS datastore in the remaining free space of the disk.


Click Next.


In the Properties page, enter a datastore name and click Next.


If needed, adjust the file system and capacity values.

By default, the entire free space on the storage device is available.


Click Next.


In the Ready to Complete page, review the datastore configuration information and click Finish.

This process creates the datastore on a Fibre Channel disk for the ESX host.


Click Refresh.
