You allocate storage to a virtual machine when you create it and you can adjust the allocation later. The amount and type of storage allocated to the virtual data center in which you create the virtual machine determine your choices. For example, if Standard and SSD-Accelerated storage tiers are allocated to the virtual data center, you can select either tier, or both, for the virtual machine.

You assign multiple storage tiers to a virtual machine by adding multiple hard disks. You cannot mix storage types in a single hard disk.

The primary disk must meet the template's storage specification. It cannot be less than the size specified in the template. For example, if the template specifies 40 GB of storage, the primary disk must be at least 40 GB.

1

Navigate to the virtual data center.

2

In the Summary tab of the virtual data center, click Create new virtual machine from template.

3

Follow the Create New Virtual Machine from Template wizard and make your storage selections in the Edit resources page.

For the primary disk, select the storage tier and the storage amount. All storage tiers allocated to the virtual data center are listed.

The primary disk defaults to the template's storage specification. Do not reduce the amount allocated to the primary disk.

To assign multiple storage tiers to the virtual machine, add a hard drive and select the storage tier and amount for it.
