This edition of the vCloud Air Compute Service Programming Guide provides information about version 9.0 of the vCloud API and the subset of operations and objects in the vCloud API that are accessible to tenants of the VMware vCloud® Air™ Virtual Private Cloud OnDemand service option.

VMware provides many different APIs and SDKs for applications and goals. This guide provides information about the vCloud API for users and administrators in vCloud Air tenant organizations who are interested in creating RESTful clients of the Compute Service that is available in the vCloud Air Virtual Private Cloud OnDemand service option. VMware vCloud Director® provides the Compute Service to the vCloud Air Virtual Private Cloud OnDemand service option.

The vCloud API version number is incremented whenever a new type or operation is added or an existing type or operation is changed. The vCloud Air Compute Service Programming Guide is revised with each new version of the vCloud API, including unreleased versions and versions in which there are no changes to types or operations that vCloud Air tenants can access.

This guide is intended for users and administrators in vCloud Air tenant organizations who are building client applications that access the API endpoint for the vCloud API available in the vCloud Air Virtual Private Cloud OnDemand service option. This guide discusses Representational State Transfer (REST) and RESTful programming conventions, the Open Virtualization Format Specification, and VMware Virtual machine technology. You must be familiar with these and other widely deployed technologies such as XML, HTTP, and the Windows or Linux operating system.

The vCloud API Schema Reference includes reference material for all elements, types, queries, and operations in the vCloud API. It also includes the schema definition files. The schema reference is available in HTML format in the vCloud Air documentation center and in the VMware vCloud Director documentation center.

The vCloud API Programming Guide for Service Providers includes topics that cover vCloud API objects and operations that are not accessible to tenants. The vCloud API Programming Guide for Service Providers is available in HTML format in the VMware vCloud Director documentation center.
