The data protection feature in vCloud Air extends data protection to your virtual data centers and to the virtual machines maintained within them. The Data Protection Service provides backup and restore service for vApps and virtual machines in the cloud.

To perform the Data Protection Service tasks to protect all virtual machines in a virtual data center, verify that you have virtual infrastructure administrator privileges in the Dedicated Cloud and Virtual Private Cloud services where you plan to manage your Data Protection Service. To manage data protection as an end user, verify that you have permission to manage your virtual machines.

A vApp consists of one or more virtual machines that communicate over a network and use resources and services in a deployed environment. A vApp can contain multiple virtual machines. vCloud Air displays information about the vApp that contains each virtual machine. You manage vApps by using vCloud Director. See Working with vApps in the vCloud Director User's Guide for information.
