Billing for the Data Protection Service uses a similar calculation to how storage is calculated. Billing is based on the following activities performed with the Data Protection Service:

Creation of virtual machines

Daily changed bytes

Additions and removals of hard disks for virtual machines

Deletion of backup images

The first time a virtual machine is backed up, you are billed on the protected bytes. On subsequent backups, you are billed only on new bytes backed up.

The first time the Data Protection Service backs up a vApp or virtual machine in place after you restore it, the daily changed bytes from the restore equal the size of the vApp.
