vCloud Air compute services offer the following types of persistent block storage. You have access to the same storage volumes and can dynamically blend storage types to best fit workload requirements.

Each Dedicated Cloud subscription includes 6TB of Basic or SSD-Accelerated storage with the option to purchase additional storage as add ons. All-SSD (high performance) storage is sold in 2TB increments as add ons. Basic storage provides traditional block storage for virtual machines. Basic storage is the more cost-conscious and ideal for virtual machines that do not require the highest performance. Basic storage provides a persistent block storage solution that is tailored to be cost-effective, while meeting the Input/Output needs of many corporate workloads.

It is appropriate for storage of tier 2 and tier 3 data. Tier 2 and tier 3 include data that is seldom-used or event driven. It is also recommended for larger, static data sets. Examples of tier 2 and tier 3 data include large data sets, such as log file storage and archival of large sets of static data. It is ideal for tier two and three workloads, like test and development, disaster recovery, and web servers.

SSD-Accelerated storage provides higher performance block storage than the Basic storage option for virtual machines. SSD-Accelerated storage is appropriate for all tiers (1, 2, and 3) to meet the needs of all but the highest Input/Output Operations per Second (IOPS) requirements. VMware recommends SSD-Accelerated storage for workloads that have diverse requirements because it blends high performance with bulk storage for an optimal cost solution.

It is most suitable for tier 2 workloads by optimizing performance for storage capacity. You can choose it for tier 2 and tier 3 workloads, where performance is pooled and shared dynamically between applications.

All-SSD storage is suitable for Input/Output intensive or latency sensitive transactional applications for Dedicated Cloud customers. The service is based on all flash arrays and delivers consistent high performance.

vCloud Air provides two levels of the highest performance, flash-based storage:

All-SSD Standard—Delivers up to 6000 IOPS per 2TB

All-SSD Premium—Delivers up to 12000 IOPS per 2TB

All-SSD storage is recommended for the following tier 1 production workloads:

Workloads that require highest performance

Critical applications that require storage that scales well and has consistent performance over time

Workloads that generate heavy I/O and depend on the consistency of storage performance to service the applications running on vCloud Air

Data that is mission-critical or frequently accessed
