To monitor storage performance (especially for the All-SSD high performance storage option) and identify the current IOPS for applications, VMware recommends you use vRealize Operations Management Pack for vCloud Air. The Management Pack for vCloud Air is useful for identifying gaps between actual and expected application IOPS.

The Management Pack for vCloud Air provides default dashboards for virtual machines and virtual data centers that display storage latency and IOPS information. In particular, you can monitor and report on the following metrics:

Latency

The Management Pack includes the ability to monitor latency as close to real-time as possible.

Allocated, utilized, and peak IOPS achieved

All-SSD storage volume latency

Effective and provisioned IOPS, bandwidth, and latency

IOPS by type

The Management Pack includes a dashboard view of Provisioned IOPS (PIOPS) and Effective PIOPS (E-PIOPS) at a virtual machine, virtual data center, and tenant level.

For more information, see the vRealize Operations Management Pack for vCloud Air 3.0 User's Guide.

To download and try the management pack, see the Management Pack for vCloud Air (vchs) in VMware Solutions Exchange.

Navigate to a virtual machine to check its storage metrics by selecting Environment > All Objects > vCloud Air Adapter > vCloud Air Virtual Machine. Information for the virtual machine appears. Click Troubleshooting > All Metrics.

The Management Pack displays all storage metrics by grouping them into the same storage profile. The Management Pack retrieves the storage profile from the virtual machine and groups the storage tiers based on the storage profile ID.

The Management Pack aggregates the disk counters, sums IOPS, and averages latency, read rate, and write rate.

The Management Pack introduced storage tiers at the virtual data center and cloud level. The metrics, are derived from all the virtual machines in the virtual data center.

vCloud Air Storage Tiers Utilization

The vCloud Air Storage Tiers Utilization dashboard provides information about the resources for storage profiles used in the vCloud Air Cloud and in vCloud Air Virtual Data Centers. The Management Pack for vCloud Air retrieves storage profile data for a virtual machine from the Virtual Data Center in which it is deployed. The Storage Tiers Utilization dashboard displays the following widgets:

The top 25 storage tiers in the Cloud and the Virtual Data Centers by usage

The top 25 storage tiers in the Cloud and the Virtual Data Centers by IOPS

The top 25 storage tiers in the Cloud and the Virtual Data Centers by disk latency
