You can create a virtual machine with a guest operating system that does not have an Easy Install option if the guest operating system is supported by VMware Fusion.

You must obtain the operating system and any necessary product keys. VMware Fusion does not include any operating systems to install in virtual machines that you create.

Select File > New.

The New Virtual Machine Assistant starts.

Insert the operating system installation CD into your Mac.

If you are using an operating system installation disc image file (ISO) or an existing virtual disk, you must proceed to the Installation Media panel.

Operating system installation disc

Insert the disc into your Mac. VMware Fusion detects it and asks for confirmation that it is the operating system to install. If it is the correct operating system, ensure that Install this operating system is selected and click Continue.

If it is not the correct operating system, select Install a different operating system and click Continue.

Operating system installation disc image file

Click Continue without disc.

Existing virtual disK

Click Continue without disc.

In the Installation Media panel, select the disc or image.

Use operating system installation disc or image

Use the pop-down menu to select an operating system installation disc or to browse for the .iso file for the operating system. Click Open to identify the file.

Use an existing virtual disk

Use the pop-down menu to browse for the existing virtual disk (.vmdk) file. Click Open to identify the file.

Create a custom virtual machine

You might use this option if you are installing an older operating system from floppy images.

Click Continue to go to the Operating System panel.

In the Operating System panel, ensure that the operating system and version for the new virtual machine are correct, or select the correct operating system and version from the pop-down menus.

Click Continue.

If you are installing a Windows or Linux operating system, the Easy Install panel appears.

(Optional) Deselect Use Easy Install and click Continue to skip this panel of the Assistant.

In the Finish panel, you can use default settings to finish the virtual machine creation, or you can customize the settings before the creation is finished.

To create the virtual machine according to the specifications listed in the Finish panel

Click Finish.

Indicate the folder in which to save the virtual machine. The default is your user/Documents/Virtual Machines folder.

To change disk size or other standard settings of the virtual machine

Click Customize Settings.

Save the new virtual machine.

Make changes to the virtual machine’s disk size, processor usage, removable devices, and other configurations on the Settings window.

After you install the operating system in the virtual machine, install VMware Tools.
