You can set whether a USB device connects to your Mac or to your virtual machine whenever you attach the device.

This setting can be different for each virtual machine. If you set the default plug-in action for a virtual machine, but the virtual machine is not powered on when you attach the device, the device attaches to the Mac.

VMware Fusion must be open, with a virtual machine powered on.

From the VMware Fusion menu bar, select Window > Virtual Machine Library.

Select a virtual machine and click Settings.

In the Removable Devices section, select USB & Bluetooth.

Select the USB device from the list.

Select a plug-in action from the pop-down menu for the device.

Ask what to do

Each time you attach this USB device, you are asked if you want the device to be attached to the Mac or to the virtual machine.

Connect to this virtual machine

Each time you attach this USB device, the virtual machine recognizes it, but not the Mac.

Connect to your Mac

Each time you attach this USB device, the Mac recognizes it, but not the virtual machine.

This is the default for printers, because it is recommended that they connect to the host, not to the guest.

Close the USB Devices panel.
