Install or Configure Hyperic License

License Types in vFabric Hyperic

In addition to being available as a standalone product, vFabric Hyperic is part of several VMware product sets — VMware vFabric Suite, VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite, and vClould Suite — each with its own licensing mechanism.

If you obtained Hyperic standalone, or as part of vFabric Suite, you configure vFabric licensing.

If you obtained Hyperic as part of vCenter Operations Management Suite, you configure vCenter Operations Management Suite licensing.

If you obtained Hyperic as part of vCloud Suite, you configure vCloud licensing.

Note that if you have more than one license, you configure each of them, as described in the sections that follow.

License Consumption

Hyperic is licensed on a per managed platform basis, where a platform is:

  • A physical machine or a VM with a Hyperic Agent running on it.

    • If an agent manages a vSphere vCenter instance, it consumes a license for the platform that hosts vCenter, a license for each vSphere vHost administered by the vCenter instance, and — if an agent is installed in each VM — a license for each vSphere VM on each vHost.

  • A network device or network host managed remotely by a Hyperic Agent. (Network Device in vFabric Hyperic Resource Configuration and Metrics describes Hyperic functionality for managing remote devices and hosts.)

If you have licenses for both vFabric Suite and vCenter Operations Management Suite, you are licensed for the total number of managed platforms allowed by the vFabric license plus the number of platforms allowed by the vCenter Operations Management Suite license.

Configure vFabric License

If you obtain vFabric Hyperic as part of vFabric Suite (previously known as "vFabric Platform") refer first to the licensing information and procedure in Getting Started with vFabric Suite. If necessary, complete additional licensing tasks in this document.

vFabric Hyperic evaluation distributions include a time-limited license for 60 platforms.

After you purchase vFabric Hyperic, a production license specifies the the number of platforms you may manage, and unless you have a perpetual license, the license expiration date.

To activate your license:

  • If you acquired vFabric Hyperic standalone, create a file named vf.hyp-serial-numbers.txt that contains the product serial number provided by VMware. Install the serial number file in:

    • /etc/opt/vmware/vfabric/ on Unix-like platforms

    • %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\vmware\vfabric on Windows platforms.

  • If you obtained vFabric Hyperic as a part of vFabric Suite, configure the location of the VMware License Server that administers the network license for vFabric Suite, by adding the vfabric.licenseServer.url property to ServerHome/conf/hq-server.conf.

After performing the appropriate step above, restart the Hyperic Server.

Configure vCenter Operations Management Suite License

To configure your vCenter Operations Management Suite license, add the following line to the ServerHome/conf/hq-server.conf file:

vcops.license.key=LicenseKey

where LicenseKey is the vCenter Operations Management Suite license key.

After configuring the license, restart the Hyperic Server.

Configure vCloud License

To configure your vCloud license, add the following line to the ServerHome/conf/hq-server.conf file:

vcloud.license.key=LicenseKey

where LicenseKey is the vCloud license key.

After configuring the license, restart the Hyperic Server.
