Installing and Configuring vFabric Administration Server

A vFabric Administration Server installation has a server component that you install on a server, and an agent component, which you install on each managed node.

The server component consists of two services, a broker and an HTTP server. The broker must be running when the HTTP server starts. On Linux, the service scripts can be installed in /etc/init.d and installed as system services using the chkconfig command. Installing the Red Hat RPM does this automatically.

vFabric Administration Server can be downloaded from the VMware download site or, on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems, installed from the VMware RPM repository. After the server is installed, install the agent on each managed node by downloading the agent installer from the server.

Prerequisites

Confirm that you meet these prerequisites before you install vFabric Administration Server.

Prerequisites for Server

  • Make sure your system meets the requirements described in Supported Platforms and Configurations.

  • Install a supported JVM (see Supported Platforms and Configurations).

  • Make sure the JAVA_HOME environment variable is set to the base directory of the JVM installation. The variable must be set in the root user's environment in order to install vFabric Administration Server from the VMware RPM repository.

  • Install Erlang version R14B or later on the server. See Installing Erlang.

  • Obtain root permission on Linux or Administrator rights on Windows.

Prerequisites for Managed Nodes

  • Make sure your system meets the requirements described in Supported Platforms and Configurations.

  • Install a supported JVM (see Supported Platforms and Configurations).

  • Make sure that managed nodes that will participate in a group managed with vFabric Administration Server have Java and the agent installed at the same locations so that the value of the JAVA_HOME environment variable and the path to the agent installation directory are the same on each node. Nodes that are members of the same group must also have the same OS.

  • If you plan to run RabbitMQ applications on managed node, install Erlang R14B or later on each managed node on which you will run vFabric RabbitMQ applications.
