About VMware Software Manager - Download Service

VMware Software Manager - Download Service is a tool for managing downloads of VMware suite products. The tool allows you to browse and download software, monitor the progress of downloads, and locate your downloaded software in an organized folder structure.

This Download Service 1.3 release resolves some known issues from previous releases, and adds the following new features:

  • You can now download drivers, tools, open source software, and custom ISOs using Download Service.
  • A new Download Preferences panel allows you to select what types of software you want to download.
  • Use of SSLv3 and TLSv1 is disabled by default.

Downloading and Installing Download Service

To download:

  1. Go to http://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/downloads and locate the download page for VMware Software Manager - Download Service.
  2. Download the file VMware-Software-Manager-Download-Service-1.3.0.3235247.msi to your system.
  3. Double-click VMware-Software-Manager-Download-Service-1.3.0.3235247.msi to launch the installer.
  4. Follow the installation instructions in the VMware Software Manager - Download Service User's Guide documentation.

Support for VMware Software Manager is community-based. Use the VMware Software Manager - Download Service Community to provide feedback and request assistance with any problems you encounter while using Download Service.

Log files can assist in troubleshooting and resolving errors. To gather log files for Download Service:

  1. Log in to the Windows system on which Download Service is installed.
  2. Select Start > Command Prompt.
  3. Type cd C:\Program Files\VMware\Software Manager\Download Service.
  4. Type download-service-support.bat -w directory where directory is the location where you want to store the log bundle.

The log bundle is collected in a .tgz file named download-service-support-hostname-date.tgz.

Known Issues

  • During a suite or product download, the download might fail with mismatched checksum, mismatched file size, or missing file errors
    When you have selected the option in the download preferences to download Custom ISOs, Drivers and Tools, or Open Source files, some downloads might fail with errors related to mismatched checksums, mismatched file sizes, or missing files. This is caused by files that are missing from the remote depot or have incorrect file size or checksum information.

    Workaround: VMware is working to resolve these issues. Until they are resolved, deselect the Custome ISO, Drivers and Tools, and Open Source options in the download preferences, and re-start the download.

The resolved issues are grouped as follows:

  • Download page does not display previously downloaded software after upgrade to Download Service
    After you upgrade from Download Service, software that you downloaded using the earlier version might not apear on the Downloads page.

    Workaround: While viewing the Downloads page, refresh your Web browser.
